An open letter to Enda Kenny, the Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland from Rev. Kevin D. Annett, Secretary of
The International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS)

22 July, 2011
Enda Kenny, Taoiseach
Republic of Ireland

Dear Mr. Kenny,

On behalf of our network of survivors of church torture around the world, including men and women in Ireland, I wish to heartily congratulate you for your courageous declaration in the Dail this past week regarding the criminal actions of the Vatican and its attempt to obstruct justice in your country.

Never before has a head of state spoken so clearly and forcefully as you did about the absolute sanctity of the innocence of children and our duty to protect children over and above the vested interests of the church.

Your statement is a shining example to other nations and will, hopefully, catalyze other political leaders to draw a similar firm line against criminal actions by the church in their own countries.

Your words will, I trust, be accompanied by equally forceful legislative and legal action by your government to bring to trial any priest or church official who harms a child, subverts justice, protects child rapists and allows this reign of terror to continue against the innocent.

In this regard, let me encourage you to persevere in your courageous defense of Ireland’s children, and to reach out to those advocates and survivors’ groups across Ireland that are battling to bring these crimes to light and bind the wounds of the victims.

Since 2008, I have worked with and rallied with many of these Irish groups, and their brave men and women, including outside the Dail and churches across Ireland (see below). As part of the work of our Tribunal, I plan to return to Dublin in mid October on a speaking tour to promote our investigative work, including by holding a commemorative rally with survivors outside Dublin’s Pro Cathedral on Sunday, October 23 at 11 am.

I would like to request the opportunity to meet with you during my time in Ireland, at your convenience, to outline to you some of the efforts of our Tribunal to assist survivors of church torture in Ireland and elsewhere, and to seek the support of your government in doing so.

I look forward to your reply, and to our eventual meeting. You have made me proud again of my Irish lineage.

Most respectfully,
Rev. Kevin D. Annett, Secretary
The International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS)
